A pastoralist approach to resource management often involves a flexible use of available land. Pastoralists tend to cooperate with other land users so the environment is used for a variety of purposes at different times. This process of diversification is visible in the pastoral landscapes of Tunisia, Tuscany, on the Horn of Africa, and in Sardinia. Pastoralists often benefit from cooperating and forming alliances with other land users. . . . Through these alliances, farming and herding activities intersect: farmlands can be turned over to grasslands, or crop residues to animal feed. . . . For example, in the western Indian state of Gujarat, during the winter season these Rabari pastoralists from Kutch negotiate with cotton farmers in the Morbi area for their livestock to graze on cotton residues. Often, pastoralists agree with the farmer to give their free labour in return. . . . Elsewhere, in summer months, these pastoralists feed their animals on wheat field residues, for which they receive payment from the farmers in exchange for manure. This establishes a mutually beneficial alliance between farmers and pastoralists. . . . In Golok, Amdo Tibet, winters are harsh. Seeking suitable fodder storage can be a challenge for pastoralists. This family uses the landscape to construct a fodder storage place. This simple design, cut into the hillside, protects fodder from the strong winds and snow. Locust swarms decimating plant life in parts of Isiolo, Kenya. In desperation, local pastoralists are using motorbikes and whistles to try and keep them away. These videos (shared with PASTRES researcher Tahira Shariff Mohamed) are made by locals, who shout "record everything". They want the public and authorities to know the extremity of the situation. A few planes have been used to spray pesticides, but in these remote areas it is a difficult job. The New York Post reports that the UN recommends $76 million is needed immediately to widen such efforts across East Africa. What new uncertainties will pastoralists in Isiolo face as a result of this infestation? PASTRES researchers are in the field all year.
